Sault Ste Marie

A cooperative effort between the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Sault Ste. Marie Meijer store was hailed as good step forward by City Engineer Linda Basista for all of the involved parties. The existing carpool, located at the northwest corner of the southbound I-75 off-ramp and Three Mile Road. will be closed for the winter on Nov. 10 and will not re-open. A sign declaring the lot closed and instructing motorists to the nearby Meijer parking lot has been posted at this location, providing a window of adjustment for those who have utilized this carpool location. Basista explained this proposed change was something that had been on the table as part of the planning associated with the arrival of the new shopping center and that Meijer has a history of providing parking for those who carpool at other locations throughout the State of Michigan. “Anytime you can consolidate, it’s always a good thing,” said Basista, adding that this will allow for the elimination of the driveway and subsequently relieve some of the congestion that can occur in that area. The other major advantage, Basista noted, was the city will be able to remove a street light over the existing carpool lot which should lead to a reduction in the monthly electricity bill. The new carpool area, described as a public-private partnership between MDOT and Meijer, will be located in the southeast corner of the Meijer parking lot. Those wishing to utilize the new site are instructed to follow the carpool signs and park in the designated location.
